8 Fun Games to Play with Your Kid that Will Have You Working Up a Sweat

When it comes to getting in shape as a mom, time is of the essence. There’s no better way to get into shape than to get your kiddo involved. These kid-friendly workout ideas don’t only have you working up a sweat, but they instill healthy life habits with your kid too.

Take Your Baby on a Hike

Hiking with a baby isn’t super complicated. The outdoor environment gives your young one plenty to look at while you get your sweat on. Not to mention, babies tend to sleep through everything. There are a few quick things to keep in mind when taking your baby hiking.

  • Remember to drink plenty of water, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Plan on drinking 6 to 7 liters per day if you go on an easy to moderate hike (2 - 3 hours) at elevation.

  • Protect your kiddo from the sun. Make sure your baby has a hat, shade, and sun protection, such as infant-friendly sunscreen. Just be sure to avoid putting sunscreen on their hands.

  • Keep the terrain mellow. Hike on easy to moderate trails that don’t require the use of your hands.

  • Make sure your baby can breathe. If you’re using a front carrier, make sure your chest isn’t suffocating your kid. Use a backpack carrier if your baby can sit up and support their own head.

Playground Obstacle Course

With an older kid that loves to be outside on the playground, set up an obstacle course. Compete with your child for the fastest time, best style, or most creative way to go. Alternate between either adding on to the obstacle course or creating a new one. This is a great way to exercise and have fun with your kid. It gets the creative juices flowing too!

Scavenger Hikes

Get older kids excited about hiking by going on a scavenger hunt! Come up with a list of things to find along the hike (cairns or rock piles, bird feathers, heart-shaped rocks, small rodents, and certain wildflowers are a great place to start!). As you walk along, have your kid play I Spy or snap photos of what they find on the list.

Remember to practice Leave No Trace. Don’t pick up and collect the items or leave un-natural items such as painted rocks. Simply observe, snap a photo and put the item back where you found it. Make a photo collage of all the neat things you find together!

Head to a Ninja Gym

Rainy days? No problem! Head to a Ninja Gym or indoor climbing gym with your kiddo. Many places offer free day passes or discounts for first-time visitors. You and your kid can try something new together. Many gyms offer instruction (sometimes for free) and give an introduction to the gym. It’s a fun way to move and exercise with your kid and bond over a new experience.

Check Out a New Bike Path

If your kid loves to ride their bike, hop on your wheels and go for an adventure. Discover a new bike path, explore a new park, or visit a new town. Again, you’ll both get moving, but you’ll also get the chance to explore somewhere new and switch up your routine. This is a great, family-friendly workout activity. Just don’t forget your helmets.

Play Copy Cat

Got a toddler? Then you’re in luck (even if it doesn’t feel like it). Copy all of the movements your toddler does for an hour. Do they crawl? Crawl! Stand and wiggle? Wiggle with them! Toddlers tend to naturally move more ergonomically since they haven’t developed bad movement habits yet. You’ll be surprised how much you work your core and quads. Toddlers often do squats, sit-ups, and push-ups properly. Your little one will giggle as you mimick their movements and you’ll be sweating up a storm.

Have a Dance Party

If you’re stuck folding laundry or cleaning, spice up the home activity with a dance party. Have your kids play a song and alternate choosing as you make your way through housework. It may take longer, but I guarantee your chores will be more fun!
